This little man appears in the
Honda parts microfiche for
the Honda Shadow! |
Okay, your saying to yourself "I got a Nokia mobile
phone, but what does that have to do with my Honda Shadow???" Well, its was
only recently my brother came to me and showed me his phone (same model as
mine), and on the screen was an image of Snoopy snoring. My immediate response
was of course "How the ____ did you do that!!!" After all we both had
a Nokia 5110, and I was not aware of the ability of adding any type of graphic
to this model of phone.
To cut a long story short, just about all Nokia mobile
phone models (including 3210, 5110, 5130, 6110, 6130, 6150, 7110, 8210, 8810,
8850, 9110) have the ability to display a graphic in place of the carrier logo/
text. Mine simply had MobileNet (the name of the mobile phone network I am
with), and I was not aware that this was actually an image you could change.
There are various ways to change the image, and the easiest of these is an SMS
(short message service) message where the new graphic is phone-mailed to you,
and you are then given a menu which allows you to view, save, discard the new
logo. You can also use IrDA or a cable connection to upload the image, if you
have these (I currently do not). I simply used a service (BlueSkyFrog) which
allows you to design your own graphic and click send on their website and have
the image sent to your mobile number as a special SMS message. They provide a
couple of downloads for free, provide a few more for virtually nothing (i.e. take
the tutorial and get an extra two downloads etc.), after this it is AUD$1.25 per
download.
Which method you choose will depend on whether you have
the cable or IrDA and, if you choose to have it sent to your mobile via SMS,
where in the world you are. If you are interested in getting a graphic on your
mobile, just do a search for "Nokia Logo" on one of the search
engines. I found numerous services around the world when I did a search on
Excite.
Below I provide the images I have created. Please note
that the image must be 14x72 pixels and in black and white (not grayscale), so
there are limitations. All the same they look very impressive on the phone. Just
right-click on the images below and select "Save Picture As..."
I have also included the graphic below, which
I have also designed. This looks fantastic on the phone, and floors people when
you casually tell them you have "upgraded" your phone and show them
the display! With this logo on your mobile, you're going to win any mobile wars
hands down! :-) It absolutely looks wild, and a casual reference to
"Windows NE" (Nokia Edition) provides a jaw-dropping experience for
your buddies. If they have the same model phone they may threaten you with
bodily harm until you tell them exactly how THEY can get Windows NE on THEIR
mobile! :-)

Since initially writing this I have purchased the
necessary cable to connect to my notebook (included in the Nokia Data
Suite). This cable not only allows one to use their phone as a modem (this
is why I purchased it actually), it allows the free uploading of the
image, or sending the image to others at the cost of an SMS message. So if
you live in Australia, and you would like me to SMS you a logo, then let me
know. |
 |
| I have now got a Nokia 8250, with
IrDA port! This means I can simply use my notebook computer (which
also has an IrDA port) to upload and send logos. |

| I know this is old now,
this was initially written a long time ago. Now I have a 3230, and
while I am still happy to send you the logo, I am having trouble
getting the logos through my phone as it does not cater for the old
style operator logos. I could possibly send it to you as a picture
message. Just note that the old B&W logos also pale in comparison
to modern phone graphics and there may be some copyright controls on
your phone which prevent you from using picture message images SMSed
to you. |
