Custom Baby Blue Metallic Paint

My custom paint is here! A fully custom baby blue metallic Honda Shadow ACE 750! The results were beyond all my expectations. It was not only the exact color and shade I had envisaged, but had the perfect amount of metallic. I went with the chunkiest metallic they could do, and they added something that made it look even more chunky (it makes the flakes stand on edge). This is NOT metal flake, which is like glitter, this is metallic, which just looks sparkly. You can see the panels and a close up of the tank below:

For those interested in a custom paint job, my understanding of automotive finishes is now as follows:

Finish Description
Flat Color only, with no depth of finish. Very few new vehicles seem to be painted in flat colors.
Metallic Highly reflective metallic silver particles.
Mica Due to it's partially reflective and partially refractive qualities it gives a much more subtle metallic look with the impression of a slightly deeper finish. Tends to darken the finish.
Pearl Fine mica. Looks just like fine metallic, but with much reduced "sparkle". Often explained as having a "cleaner" look.
Candy A transparent color coat, usually applied over another finish (e.g. metallic and or color). Really only suitable for fully saturated (strong) colors. By using a different color than the base coat, color changes and effects can be obtained. For example, by spraying red candy over a blue base you get a paint that look purple but reflects red.
Metal Flake Actual manufactured glitter that is applied in a clear coat (over a base coat). The flakes are usually colored, and they have a range of effects. To me it looks OTT. Not popular for spraying due to various technical issues. Most items that have flake are made of fibreglass and the flake is actually in the fibreglass resin.

The above can really help you out of you are considering painting your scoot. In general metallic, mica and pearl are the same cost as flat paint. Candy costs more due to the additional coats and the difficulty in getting perfectly even results.

Shameless Plug

I used Simca - Specialist Motorcycle Crash Repairers to do the painting. These guys seem much more professional than any other place we found, they are very busy, and they are enthusiastic. They also use PPG paint, as well as having full paint shop facilities and specializing in motorcycles. Unfortunately, they were also a little more expensive than any other quote I got. I suspect this is a case of you get what you pay for though, and worth every penny. The guy I dealt with down there, Matt,  was great, he was relaxed, enthusiastic and helpful. He happily custom mixed the color, and took every care to make sure I got exactly the color, shade and effect I wanted. Hence this shameless plug! Their details are:
