What is the "Root Directory"

The root directory is the base level of the drive. To place a file in the root directory is to place a file in a drive but not in any subdirectory (or folder). So if I had a file called "MyFile.XXX" in the root of my C: drive, its location would be:

C:\MyFile.XXX
