Which CD format should I choose? What brand of CD is best?

Generally speaking you should choose ISO9660 format for commercially distributed CDs. The ISO9660 format is not only the most widely recognised format, it is also the quickest to load (See Related Topics below). Other formats can be unrecognised in some computers. This can be because the CD drive is very old, and simply does not recognise CDR or CDRW formats, or the CD-ROM drive simply does not recognise the brand of CD you are using, or a particular combination of both.

In our wide range of experience we have found that the most widely recognised CDR brand to be Mitsubishi blues. Verbatim blues appear to be the same product (except they are branded with Verbatim) and as such are equally good.

We have found that the worst CDRs recognised are the Kodak golds. Many CD-ROM drives will not read these CDs. In particular many IBM Aptivas will not recognise this CDR at all (it will spin up, and spin back down continuously). But you will find problems with many older CD-ROM drives and others as well.
